Joe's Family Pictures

(of Joe - well it is my web site)

This is 17448 Goddard Street, Detroit, Michigan 48212.  The old homestead is located in Conant Gardens, one of the few places Blacks were allowed to move to in the 1940's and early 1050's in Detroit.  My father purchased the house in 1949.

My bedroom window can be seen behind the tree on the second floor.  I loved that tree.  My father cut it down in 1970 while I was away at college.  My sister Yolanda's room was on the top right.

Mom and Dad's room was on the bottom left and the bottom right window is the living room.

The house on the left caught fire in 2002.  We're still waiting for the City to demolish it.  The house on the right was torn down in 2003.

This is the oldest picture of me I can find.  I'm about 3 months old.  Life was REALLY good.  That's big sister Yolanda on the left.  It's somebody's birthday party.

This is a picture of me (age 2) and my

sister Yolanda (age 3) with Mom.  The

picture was taken in the back yard at

Goddard Street in 1953.

This is my graduation picture from Nolan Jr.

High School.  The year is 1966.  I have on my fashionable Ban Lon sport shirt and collarless sport coat.  This was sharp for 1966!

This picture was taken in the living room at

Goddard Street. I'm 16 years old. That's

sister Lisa's favorite doll in my hands.  I'm threatening to chock the doll.  I remember Lisa crying over my antics.  Sorry Lisa.

Here I am on high school graduation day wearing the Pershing Blue and Gold.  I'm in the living room at Goddard Street.  It still looks the same. I wish I did.

Life is good!  That's me and a friend after the

ceremony.  I think that's Winifred.

Here's a picture of me at age 18.  It's 1969, my freshman year at Purdue.  I'm in my spacious dorm room in Cary Quadrangle.  Cary was/is the oldest dormitory on campus.  The only thing I did not hate about living in Cary was that it's located behind the football stadium.  We didn't have far to

walk!

Here's the other end of my fabulous dorm room. Check out the beds.  That's my room mate Charlie in the chair with his hands on his head.  I remember he was from South bend, Indiana.  I have no idea who the other guy is with the beer mug.  Looks like we were having fun.

More to Come.....
